Concerns different jurisdictions in province of Texas, settlers, governments and enemy Indian tribes in region; contains descriptions of fertility of presidio and mission lands in region; fairly extensive information on Indian populations and lands inhabited by them; also concerns Demesieres' campaign in north and broadening of frontier boundaries encroaching further on Indian lands (Tavoayases); problem of Indian hostilities in Coahuila province addressed and its relationship with residents of Louisiana trading with hostile Indians discussed; contains letters from Demesieres to Galvez describing his trip north with detailed descriptions of lands around Colorado, Trinidad, and Brazos rivers; includes descriptions of Indian tribes of region (friendly and hostile), dress, agriculture and in particular deals with Tuacanas and Tancagues; Mesieres suggests founding settlement of Spaniards and Tlaxcaltecas as key to northern regions to open possibilities for trade and to better deal with hostile tribes (Comanches and Osages) and also to impede any further expansion of English into area. Summary
Series of documents concerning peaceful Indians being resettled in presidios. Mention is made of unwillingness Indians have to being moved, prefering to stay where they were born. Results of military campaigns against Apaches is reported to viceroy, outcome of military actions involved some Indians killed, soldiers injured, Indians taken prisoners including women and children. Concerning military response to Lipan depredations. Rengel leads expedition of 140 men plus 10 Gileno auxiliaries from Janos to arrest Apaches that have been raiding, hiding out in Guadalupes. F.507 good conduct of Allied Navajos, Yutas, Gicarillas in Nueva Mexico. F.509 mentions Yutas also Allied with Lipanes, Lipiyanes, followed by letters stating this is impossible. F.515 search for bodies of muleteers presumed killed by Indians on Sierra Madre, now buried under snow. F.521 mentions Mescalero auxiliaries' hands covered in the blood of Lipanes. (A. F.401 mentions treaties with various Apache bands of Nueva Vizcaya, suggests those now seeking peace are false, should be considered a disease and exterminated . . . Subsist on war, only pretending to wish peace. detail on Spanish idea of Lipan character. F.416 mentions severe rains of October, 1792 making travel miserable. F.418-421 discusses part of real reglamiento de presidios (apparently) stating that opposition to treaties with Indians is diametrically opposed to spirit of peace Spanish are trying to convey. Contingent of soldiers to conde de Revilla gigedo, preparing for a visit from conde de Revilla gigedo; nava informs of peace or better said armistice reached with lipanes vaamonde relays this info to conde and requests further instructions; detailed explanation of the peace convention reached between lipanes and Spanish with articles posed by the Spanish and indian responses to them. Articles touch on subjects of captives, geographic demarcation of settlement, land, lipane responsibility for making sure that all in their population are within the reduccion, alliance with Spanish, judicial jurisdiction, Castro orders contingent of men and details quantity of munitions and supplies to bring to go to Rio Grande area in order to battle indians; copy of letter that first appeared in file 162ah, i between ff.448-454 describing attack on Castro by escaping lipanes; further information on contingent of men requested by Castro; vaamonde writes to conde de Revilla gigedo presenting a case for the reinstitution of the two companies that were disbanded by ugalde in nuebo reyno de leon; vaamonde writing on the state of affairs with regards to military situation in nuevo leon, makes mention of failed efforts of his predecessor ugalde to reach a durable accord with Apaches, inability of military to properly defend the area, request for weapons. Putting a halt on supplies being shipped to quiscate while giving supply of tobacco and gunpowder to group of comanches and tacahuanes preparing for battle against lipanes; virrey reminds munoz that within his province are people secretly collaborating with lipanes and urges discovery of these individuals; comanches offer to contain Apache incursions in exchange for right to settle near the Rio Grande, tahuacanes, tancahueses, and tahuayases make similar proposal in regards to lipanes; diary of daily events concerning lipanes by trevino - goes out in search of lipanes rancherias finds some abondoned settlements that evidence recent fighting (horse killed with arrow), enlists the help of taguayas(indian) in search for lipanes, finds out that lipanes have been informed of search by other spies who Spanish had been using, confrontation with lipanes with help of indians from the comanche nation and taguayazes who looted more than they fought; renewed commitment on the part of the comanches to fight against the Apaches; munoz cites linkages formed by marriages as principal reason why there are collaborators with lipanes; mentions Castro in regards to resettling of 400 comanches on the banks of the Rio Grande; report elaborating on a series of thefts and attacks committed by comanches in San Antonio and bahia del Espiritu Santo; lipanes send a 70 year old member of their nation to ask military to explain the new hostilities between the Spanish and his nation; Gomez killed and boy taken prisoner in indian attack; gives some numbers on recent thefts and attacks and who was sent out in search of indians responsible.
