Copy of reserved instructions that Neve governor of Californias government should be to conserve peace in peninsula --treating of areas of Indians not yet made docile, including punishment of Gentiles for killing livestock in San Francisco to communicate all mission orders to Junipero or Hidalgo; other encouragement to avoid strife. Describes his visita, state of each mission, Villa; records Indians speaking Castillan, some industriously planting fields or cleaning churches, some who need to be taught how to work. mentions rations of corn, meat, tobacco; problems with water supply; baptism of Indians, giving Christian names. Three letters from Ugalde to Florez. First two discuss past situation with each band of Apaches; how he anticipates future of treaty, necessary military stance to ensure compliance. F.202 third letter Ugalde mentions personal friendship with Picax-Ande, how far he thinks he can trust Lipan's intentions. F.205 mentions treaty signed July 10, 1788 at Rio Puerco, stipulations, bands involved, aftermath. F.206 livestock, cigars, grain given to Picax-Ande for treaty; he then attends mass. Some physical description of Apaches camped at San Fernando. Ff.206-207 detailed description of ceremony Apaches perform in celebration, including war dance toward destruction of Comanches; further description occasionally through F.219. Periodic mention of rations given to Indians (apparently accompanying Spanish on March.) F.219 discusses reasons for baptism as told to Indians. Interesting, well-written, easily legible documents. Letters from Lorca y Villera, 1774, Nuevo Reino de Leon. Postal service in Nuevo Leon, death of Indian prisoners, death of Indians on hacienda (de Patos y Villa de Parras), need for military equipment (rifles, gunpowder) for defense of province. Letters discuss attack by Indians on July 25, 1773 and attack on Indians by Spaniards in Valle de Pesqueria Grande, of August 16, 1774. Informe from conde de Sierra Gorda concerning new mission in Valle Viejo. Letter giving permission for marriage of Soldados Voluntarios to christianized Indian women. Ugarte reports to viceroy that Munoz was responsible for escape of prisoners; Munoz demoted; Ugarte includes letters of other people on this matter. Villegas sends list of Indians who have died, escaped, or been delivered in Mexico. Letters of baptisms to dying Apaches. Letter of Gomez reporting how Munoz negligence led to escape of prisoners.
