Two maritime districts are created, San Blas and Veracruz, offices established and regulations outlined-special emphasis on dealing with deserters; dispatch of transportation to Acapulco to pickup Areche; surgeons named to ships destined for California; Salazar turns down offer to be chaplain for ships to California; notice of pay raise; certifaction of aptitude of Martinez; ship la conception incapable of trip to California because of broken keel, turned into flat-bottomed boat; good ships for travel to California and Sonora, and conversion of ship to flat-bottom sworn to by ships officers; original request and grant of pay raises; request that Sister of Bausa be sent part of his salary as support. Correspondence is of administrative and fiscal nature, expenditures, salaries, appointments, recruitment and health problems; ship construction and repair, continuation from previous folios of problems (with keel) and building of launch and paquetbot; supplies for repairing warehouse in comisaria. Cargos and itineraries for Goleta Sonora, paquetbots San Carlos and el Principe (San Antonio). Ff. 311-313 announce arrival of Goleta Sonora, transporting pigs and servants for Areche, explaining delay due to bad Weather and shortage of food supplies. Summary
On Hijosa's orders, the following three documents were prepared: 1) ff. 284-304 consist of detailed inventory of the San Carlos, hull, masts, sails, rudder, pilots area, anchors, cables and rigging, pilot's equipment, workmen's supplies and auxiliary boats. 2) ff. 305-307 is a list of food rations, amounts given based on assumed daily consumption and necessity. Major cheese, condiments, water, firewood and kitchen utensils. 3) ff. 308-310; bill of lading for food shipped to Loreto. Includes amounts and buying price of in San Blas and selling price for Loreto, after obligatory (by provincial regulation) 100 surcharge is added. (J. M. Johnson, September 1988)
