Juan Gonzalez de Burgos is Charged with owing 1,393 from his term as admn. de Tabacos, Polvora, y Naipes. His fiadores pull out, one by one, leaving him to come up with the money. Given are accounts for the Renta for 1800-1802. Gives a good idea of how the Renta was controlled. (P. Hayes) (1977)

Previously the use and cultivation of tobacco had been denied to Indians of the mission. The marques questions this practice and asks about the feasibility of encouraging the natives to cultivate tobacco. An effort which could benefit all concerned. Ask the missionaries help. (D. Deeds) (1977)

F.189 concerns accusation of misconduct against Tueros in matter of tobacco seed at Vizarron (seems to be tax evasion). F.200 concerns political factions, election of gobernador in Nuevo Leon. Letters concerning nos y Monforte's request for retirement pay. Ff.4 chart of money receipts and expenditures for many towns. Ff.7-8 are a private letter which mentions a proposal by a tobaccoist, Ramon Vasquez, relating to nos y Monforte's request. Ff.9 is a chart from nos y Monforte which relates to his earnings and expenditures (on the job?) from 1788-1792. (S. Langmack October 1989)

Informes containing lists of wealths entering and leaving from real hacienda of Durango provincial treasury, Durango customs, and tobacco factory in month of August 1818. Includes tables (empty) listing absences of workers in fore mentioned enterprises. Cordero ordered to produce informe related to functioning of arms factory and asks for a sketch of port Guaymas so that defense devices may be placed. (J. Hiller, March

Lengthy document by Garrido y Duran informing Revilla Gigedo on the causa de policia,judicial, economic, and military conditions of Sonora and Sinaloa up to 1790. On judicial Side, it is mentioned that province consists of 11 jurisdictions headed by a jefe de tribunal with the power to appoint local town officials; these officials operate without salary due to lack of funds caused by Apache depredations and poor harvests. Mention that in the recent past Indians were forced to work in mines, haciendas, and Ranchos, and that they were exploited and did not have time to cultivate their own land; now he has prohibited this, and that Indians will work on a voluntary Basis. Discussion that community wealth is administrated by the missionaries, and that they often are more concerned for their own interests allowing community conditions to deteriorate. It is also mentioned a lack of prisons. With respect to causa de policia, it is mentioned that Apache attacks have frightened the population and have prevented increases in commerce, mining, agriculture, and animal husbandry. Mention of lack of civil and administrative office in many towns; there is lack of hospitals, casas de Obraje, schools, and public meat and seeds stores. Mention that people are divided in two groups, one consisting of good people involved in commerce, mining, and agriculture; the other consisting of house servants and Manual laborers, who are drunkards and have other vices. Economics- list of different tax collection offices. Mention of the different partidos as well as the people holding these offices and amount of money payed for such offices. In order to attract more merchants to frontier, no tax is Charged on their goods. With respect to military affairs, it is mentioned that enemy Indians live in dispersed hamlets, lack supreme chief, and operate separately; Indians described as thieves. Mention of 6 military groups of soldiers, and 3 of Indian auxiliaries; short discussion of soldier's living conditions in presidios, as well as expenses involved for maintenance of troops. (J. Garcia Cano, retired presidial teniente with 38 years of service, seeks employment with Renta de Tabaco because his pension is so small. Writing in margins, Bonavia states that Garcia Cano not qualified to be appointed capitan or to any other branch of royal service. Also recommends that Garcia Cano's son not be given employment because of his notoria Mala conducta. virrey therefore denies petition. (T. Sheridan, March 1990)
