Excellent letter concerning vicious personal feud between padres Ortiz and Garcia. Ortiz accused Garcia of treating Indians too harshly, working them so hard they didn't have time to cultivate their own Milpas, beating them for the slightest infractions. Yaqui leaders corroborate Ortiz' charges. According to una coyota in Torim, Garcia beat the temastian so brutally he died 6 months later. Garcia accuses Ortiz of attacking him between Torim and Bacum and of being and of being a drunk. Arriola believes Ortiz is insane. Both missionaries use Yaquis to carry out feud. (T. Padre Lauria writes to padre provincial, Andres Xavier Garcia, narrating scandalous activities of one padre Martin Ballauta who has been working Yaqui missions without licence, has found or stolen some silver and is living with women and creating a political problem. (R. Divis) (78)

Ortiz rants, raves about fellow Jesuits responsible for attempting to remove him from his mission. Incredible language- calls one of his enemies un pedazo de mierda. also, accuses them of being mulatos and Lobos. One of reasons for his removal is his inability to learn Yaqui. (T. Sheridan) (1979)

Padre Roque de Andonaegui is Charged with immoral behavior and mismanagement of society funds at Cusiguniachi, but later letters and final judgment by provincial absolve him. (R. Davis) (78)

Padre Lazaro Franco responds to padre Cristobal de Escobar's letter which leveled charges against him brought by padre Miguel Castillo; in Parral. Franco denies the charges and welcomes any further investigation. (R. D. Davis) (78)

Report by hacienda real concerning alleged misappropriation of funds and misrepresentation of mission operations by society of Jesus missionaries. Visitador Galvez accuses Peninsular Californian priests of embezzling money from crown by claiming expenses on non-existant presidios, missions and Indian labor. Galvez charges mis-use of funds in many frontier provinces of New Spain, California, Cinaloa and Sonora. Attached are statements supporting charges.
