Accounts of costs of gifts (money, Tabaco, corn, metal crosses, etc.) Given to Indians as peace offerings; costs of maintenance of prisoners of war. Mentions Tamaulipe pow's. (A. Dean, July 1989)

Reports to Flores de San Pedro from missionaries concerning success of reduccion, status of pueblos receipts for donations to missions by military and civil government. Documents span two years, all same general format, theme. F.409 mention giving sacraments to reduced Indians at Miraflores in their own language. F.415 further mention of barbarous death of Luna; mentions which missionaries responsible for which pueblos. (A. Dean, March 1990)

Ugarte y Loyola has gathered peaceful Chiricahuas at Bacoachi; bishop of Sonora asks for missionary to be sent. Speaks of distribution of lands. Treasury says money for mission has to come out of ration funds. Need for missionary for Seris at Pitic. Mention of deporting Apaches to Havana as example to others. Mention of successful conversion of Seris; money donated for purchase of musical instruments. Medina is warned of suspected revolution by Seris. References to Noriega's salary. (A. Dean, April 1989)

Three unrelated sets of documents from Coahuila. F.238 concerns cannons acquired by lizarrara's church being traded for donation from presidio. F.245 letters by priests suggesting convert and treat humanely those helpful to Spanish (opposed to present undifferentiated mistreatment of all Indians). Speaks of founding new presidio; better management of milicias. F.250 concerns Estrada, who claims to be legally retired, but who is being sought as deserter; presently taking refuge in church. (A. Concerns Pena's letter explaining how while working for secretaria de comandancia he was imprisoned on orders from Emparan, asking that partial salary be paid to him so he can pay off debts that he acquired and could not pay while in prison, refers back to annual salary disbursed into the cuenta de Paz y guerra as a source of requested money; prison being explained in later letter as detainment suffered when he was sent to Valle de Santa Rosa to deliver files, 4 months without receiving salary, salary eventually suspended; letter from conde de Revilla Gigedo advising that Pena get the amount he requested for the sustenance of himself and his family; Gutierres de la Cueva disburses the funds to Pena; last document in this Series refers to the dates in which the quaderno being abstracted was sent to various officials and why. Concerns debt owed by capitan of dragones de Espana Nicolas Gonzales del Junco to missions of peninsula of California; argument that barley a gift from padre Tompes to virrey for feed of horses in compania de dragones. (p. Coyle February 1990)

Bishop of Durango communicates that locals in Durango would be willing to make voluntary donations to defray expenses of dragones; 15 or 20 thousand pesos is asked from local citizens; Ugarte wants to visit Parajes and hacienda in order to See how much the citizens can donate, but thinks it is enough to clothe and provide tack for soldiers; virrey pushes for earlier request of 15 to 20 thousand pesos; volume index no. 10. Virrey (?) Comments that defensive operations are not as effective as offensive operations with respect to the goal of reduccion. Also acknowledges receipt of Rengel's campaign diary from New Mexico 1788 concerning reduccion of Apaches and use of Comanches in partidas against Apaches. Ugarte y Loyola describes company of Rengel's force as including Opatas, volunteers and infantry. Describes how Apache hostilities in past had forced Tobas to abandon their settlements.
