Written in reaction to Neve y Molina's study of Otomi. The critic contends that too many local dialects exist to permit general rules, that Neve's alphabet is too simple, that the orthography is too complex, and the dictionary inadequate. (J. Grusin) (1976)

Notes that Yaqui is the Principal language of the province, but each River region has different dialects. The texts of 'oratio dominica', 'oratio angelica' and 'symbolum' appear in latin and Yaqui. The diary recounts a sea voyage along the coast of California, leaving the bay of San Bernabe with a final destination of San Diego, although the diary ends before this point is reached. The customs, language, and technology of Indians, who came to the ship by canoe as well as those which were reached by landing parties are discussed.
