Documents concerning Valdes' campaign against rebel Seris, Pimas. Valdes investigates murder of Seri by band of Pima hunters. Takes testimony various Seris from Populo, Angeles, Pimas from Pitiquin, learns that Seris involved in fracas in Pima territory because route to Salinas led thru Pima land. Decides to reduce wild Seris (Salineros) to Populo, especially those at Carrizal. Notes various wild Seri settlements, occasionally mentions number of families living there. Order form the gobernador prohibiting the entry of any non- Indian into Indian pueblos. He establishes the penalty-a 200 peso fine, 200 lashes and hard labor in the mines. Order form the viceroy on abuse of Indians in Sonora by landowners, miners and government officials. Re-states regulations on Indian labor and wages and land use for stock- raising adjacent to Indian lands. Excellent report on the reduction of various Janos and jocames bands at Casas Grandes. A step by step description of the process; the settlement, the planting of crops, the baptisms and marriages. Gives a list of the Indians involved, their approximate age group-the money paid for sacraments, the gifts given to them by the governor. Indians of the Valley of San Bartolome are ordered sent to towns and new missions at the juncture of the Concho River and the River of the north. This is contested by the land and mine owners of San Bartolome.
