Summary
Urrea notes that 19 Seri families who Haven't been reduced to Pitic are living near Piatos. Josef Antonio, capitan de la guerra of Seris at Pitic, instructed to bring them back to Pitic. Josef Antonio states Seris went to Cerro de Picu near Piatos to eat pitahaya fruit. Josef Antonio, 15 Seris, detachment of 20 soldiers from Altar ordered to round up these Seris, who aren't thought to be dangerous. Bucareli's (2/9/1774) brief response follows. (T. Sheridan, 1980)

Resume of Sastre's communiques concerning Sonora, Sinaloa in 1772. Notes reduccion of Seris at Pitic, where they're given daily rations until they can grow their own food. Suaquis, also identified as Pimas Baxos, rebuilding their community. Some unrest among Pimas Altos. Discusses Gil's attempts to establish mission for Tiburones at Carrizal and subsequent murder. General of Tiburones kills two culprits and arrests Ysqui, the reo principal, who is handed over to Spaniards. Recommends that Tiburones by Voluntarily moved to another mission site. Proposal to split royal treasury, now at Alamos, between Ures, rasario. Inhabitant of areas along Yaquis, Mayo rivers excused from paying tribute due to destructive flooding. Discusses Cieneguilla placers. Notes increasing Apache hostilities. Vildosola scouts Sierra de Chiricagui, where Apaches gather Mescal, su Principal alimento. Summary
Discourse between the governor of Sonora and the viceroy concerning various matters of provincial administration as to absent viceregal proclamations concerning issuance of new coinage, mail franchises, and announcement of birth of Infante Carlos Clemente (ff. 309-315). Concerning gubernatorial visita Colonel of provincial militias of Pardos y Blancos of several jurisdictions to Juan Antonio Caneda, Vecino of Rosario; brief letter, written at Mazatlan stating that, Sastre, as governor, will protect and give assistance to missionaries, destroy abuses committed against Indians... etc. Letters written at Culiacan and Alamos discuss order to send viceroy intendente Corbalan's financial account of military expedition of Sonora; response to viceroy's order that said intendente make visita of mines of province; formation of flying company under command of O'Conor to put down Indian unrest in Chihuahua (See below); governor's suggestion that if Indian named Calixto does not mend his rebellious ways, then prison sentence be considered (315-335). Letters written at Horcasitas discuss governor's order stating that copy of letters from presidial commanders be sent directly to viceroy (336,337). Sastre suffers stroke effecting right arm and leg (339,340). Discourse from Lumbreras, commander of presidio of Buenavista to viceroy Bucareli y Ursua concerning atrocities committed by Piatos and Pimas Bajos in Vicinity of aforementioned presidio. Atrocities include pervasive cattle and horse rustling, murder of Indians and a Spaniard, abduction of Indian woman. Lumbreras adds that he has no spare forces to battle unrest, and requests detachment of 20 or 30 soldiers be stationed at San Jose de Pimas to suppress Piman bellicosity and guard road to Cieneguilla. He also adds that lawless behavior manifested by Indian groups is result of semi-nomadic lifestyle. Included is letter to Lumbreras, forwarded to viceroy, from missionary at Tecoripa describing events which corroborates information given by Former. In responses to autos, viceroy suggests that Lumbreras commence further reduccion of barbarous Indians, using force if necessary; letter authorizing installation of Trespalacios as lieutenant of flying company of Buenavista upon retirement of Viarraga from position. Summary
Note that policy of pequerna guerra now followed against rebels, resulting in surrender of 151 Seris so far. Tiburon inhabitants ask for pardon and be allowed to remain on island. No more Seris apparently left on island (distinction drawn between Seris/Tiburon inhabitants). Vipiri, Cueras plan to invade Ostimuri. Pursued by Bergosa and Seris under Crisanto. 8 rebels killed, 6 captured, rest escape. One member of Spanish party killed by arrow envenenad a de fresco. Crisanto named gobernador of Seris, Francisco Alcalde. Discuss various Indian depredations in Mobas region. Pineda, suffering stroke on left Side, places himself under care of curandera. In appended extracto (5/31/1770), note that after 12-14 Pima prisoners remanded to Guaymas, 40 families -100 persons - of Pimas leave Cerro Prieto and surrender at Belen.
