Acknowledging an order to use monies from the peace and war fund to supply gifts to the Cuampes, Aas, and Sayenas. Real Alencaster describes the plight of an american and two Frenchmen who accompanied the Cuampes. The american was sick from measles and could not support himself, and the two French trappers could not ply their trade in New Mexico. Real Alencaster appropriated 75 pesos to help the three. Summary
Records for investigation, trial and sentence of 3 Indians (1 woman, 2 men) accused and convicted for murder of one missionary and accused of another at mision Santo Tomas in Baja California. Detailed statements by witnesses and those accused included. Original sentence was death by hanging but since no hangman could be found, sentence was carried out by firing squad. Public display of bodies after execution took place. Interesting for insights into cultural and racial attitudes, customs, etc. (D. Deeds, 1977). (J. M. Johnson, November 1986).
