A relatively detailed ethnohistory of Julimeno Indians in Coahuila; Ugarte argues they should be deported to Havana; provides many comments on Julimeno origins, movement into province from Nueva Vizcaya (1737), and subsequent interaction with Spaniards; few details on Indian lifeways have been included; most comments focus on Julimenos secret hostility towards Spaniards, locations of their communities, and their alliance with hostile Apaches; other information provided on Apache raids and population distributions on province's frontiers. Plans by Gonzalez del Castillo to increase production of Fondo Piadoso haciendas and related fiscal correspondence. Exceptionally detailed accounts of climate, livestock management, irrigation techniques, and labor problems. Includes descriptions of miserable living conditions and personal nature of hacienda laborers and servants, and related problems with low labor output, contraband, servant indebtedness, and degenerating morality. Proposals deal mainly with the relationship between the military and the missions, with soldiers stationed in each mission. Also proposes congregating all Indians from the visitas into the missions, with Spaniards taking over the depopulated lands. Would also limit the mission Indians participation in Spanish society. (R. An extremely important letter from the Jesuit Father provincial de Oviedo to viceroy and auditor de guerra marques de Altamira in which he presents an analysis of the Indian problems in the north- particularly the Apache incursions and outlines a grand strategy for expansion and founding of a new presidio in the Gila, Colorado River area. Additional comments are made concerning difficulties of military logistics, Apache tactics, etc. And ends with comments on the civilian politics of the provinces and recommends that a visitador be sent to clear up divisions and reorganize the administration.
