Diarios of tercera compania volante de Cavalleria de Nuevo Santander with some interesting accounts of pacification of indios Gandules involving passing out cigars to everyone (ff. 236-240); accounts of various Indian Robos and attacks on travelers (including two women); mention of wars between Comanches and Mescaleros, between Lipanes and Comanches; also mention some trade items of Indians; diarios followed by military rolls and tables of debts and credits. Concerns Medina taking over responsibility of arms shipment for Grimarest because of problems of negligence, contradiction of orders and tertian fever; Grimarest writes letter in defense mentioning his deeds. Discussion of goal of capturing Chiquito capitan who escaped along with his family and other Indians; concerns investigation of escape and interview of guards; describes attempts to follow fugitives; description of escape, death of soldier and men involved; suggests freeing jailed sentinels and need to not trust Chiquito capitan. Death of Tupson capitan Soler who left no will--Nava takes precautions in verifying inventory of Soler's possessions. Concerns 3 Santa Cruz soldiers' murder of 2 peaceful Chiricahuis and their punishment and transfer. Concerns post of 1st Alferez in Nuevo Santander and company's need for replacement resulting in transfer of personnel and appropriate salary. Letters from Nava to virrey concerning military promotions. Bernardino is designated lieutenant to segunda compania volante; Rodriguez is designated Alferez to presidio de aguafuerte. Saenz, Pacheco and Alvarez are sent to peninsula de California as prisoners because they are said to have killed two Indians Apaches in peace. Because a conflict between Mier y Trespalacios and del Hierro an official a statement is made by which dependents of la Renta del Tabaco are declared as having civil privileges (gozan de fuero). Concerns observations of Lipanes by soldiers and a statement regarding situation by a civilian from San Antonio. says group encountered 2 Indians who later returned with 20 others on horseback but unarmed indicating they were mestenos. Encountered civilian who warned them about hostile Indians farther ahead and related past incident along same path. says Indians particularly hostile and desire vengeance. Disagreement over murder of Indian capitan Saz angers Indians who force group to leave keeping one of their horses. Contains accounts of conversations with Indians concerning past incidents, Saz murder, and other attacks. Some faithful Indians informed soldiers of planned raids.
