Documents detailing exploration of California, foundation of San Diego and health problems with maritime personnel. Rolls of persons that died in expedition and survivors is given. Documents relating to complaints by founder of Villa Presas del Rey to governor about Indian uprisings and lack of military detachment to stop incursions, accusing teniente Serna of incompetence for taking military force away. Also accuses governor of not being strong enough to rule. Fiscal and viceroy question lack of communication from Villa. Viceroy orders governor to imprison teniente Serna but due to Indian uprisings, governor sends Serna to fight instead, explaining to viceroy why teniente was absent from Presas del Rey. Teniente Serna in a letter to viceroy explains his conduct accusing capitan de la Serna of cruelty toward Indians. Neighbors write viceroy requesting change of justicia mayor accusing capitan de la Serna of depredations. Documents of census of families living in Presas del Rey. Documents listing rights and obligations to citizens of Presas del Rey upon foundation of Villa by capitan de la Serna. Establishment of church, garrison, and other official offices. Requests by Serna to abolish residency, judgeship and sentencing surety as few people know him, he also requests title of capitan to be given to him as founder and teniente to his son Estevan, titles are approved. Priests requests money for sinodos and traveling expenses. Conde de la Sierra Gorda sends city charter, maps, titles of Solares to build houses viceroy frees Villa for Ten years payment of primicias to church. Other documents relate disturbances in town due to absence of priest. Document refers to historical event about sinodos when churches were secularized in 1734 by request of provincial of Zacatecas. Letters to viceroy accusing provincial of Zacatecas of stealing sinodos and demanding specific amounts of money from priests under his supervision leaving friars without their sustenance and not enough monies for care of churches, some priests incurred debts with outsiders who made judicial demands about payments. same provincial is accused of stealing and melting church utensils made of gold and silver substituting them with ones of lesser value. Investigation carried by comandante general de Provincias Internas on all missions following directive of king to remedy abuses. Secularization of missions and doctrines in Santander is carried out except the mission of San Cristobal de los gualahuises where only the priest is changed but mission is transferred to diocese of Nuevo Leon. Within body of documents there is information about Indian unrest due to encroachment of lads by Spaniards, pacification force is sent but withdraws, members of force are accused of cowardice. An informe about census of Indian nations under jurisdiction of each mission is attached with accounts of depredations and killings by Indian Pedro Jose and his band.
