Summary
Two memorials by Ximenez, with a response from the fiscal. The memorials recommend procedures for the relationship between the military and mission system be adopted in Sonora similar to those used in Texas (these are listed, along with frequent legal citation). A major suggestion is the stationing of two soldiers at each mission; the fiscal's objection is the dispersion of effective military force. Ximenez lists the distances between missions, saying that they are too far apart to enlist each others aid against small enemy forays (the major need of protection) but close enough for mobilization of troops in case of major military action. Summary
Juan Marcelino Pasqual Rivas, Jose Rafael appear before the commandante general saying that their lands and livestock were embargado after the expulsion of the Jesuits, and that Joachin Gomez, mayordomo, has been using the livestock and lands for his own benefit. They say their pueblos are in ruin, the churches are in disrepair and they are accordingly unprepared to repel any invasion. Fray Jose Maria Garrido of the mission de cero cahui says many of the Indians claims are false, and goes on to document his claims. He says that, knowing Indians as well as he does, they are probably in cahoots with Joachin Gomez. (P. Hayes) (1977)
