Asked if she had ever lost a mother, she answered, "Only one," her daughter, who had died in childbirth in Bisbee. ... Stork's Nest. A maternity home for Tucson women from the 1920s to the 1940s, it was operated by Helen Jacobs and staffed by nurses night and day.

After Dr. Neill MacArtan's death, James became the second Medical Officer in Charge at the U.S. Public Service Hospital No. 51 (at Pastime Park). He served from 1922-1924 and was transferred to the U.S. Veterans Hospital No. 64 at Camp Kearney, California. November 27, 1924. Later he served again as the director of the Tucson Veterans Hospital from 1930-1943.
