The diary recounts a sea voyage along the coast of California, leaving the bay of San Bernabe with a final destination of San Diego, although the diary ends before this point is reached. The customs, language, and technology of Indians, who came to the ship by canoe as well as those which were reached by landing parties are discussed. Document is a copy of a letter by fr. Francisco Palou which contains excerpts from fr. Juan Crespi's diary of an expedition to the northern coasts. He speaks contact with natives who approach the boat. Description centers on stature and clothing of the natives, their activities around the Spanish ship, and the materials they brought for trading, and wished in return.
