Social Classes

Census of the families of the 54 soldiers in the 2nd company of the 2nd squadron, who reside in Santa Barbara. Data separated into- hombres, mujeres, ninos, ninas, Esclavos, esclavas. These statistics given for the present year and the year before. The data is then re-collated into the following categories- Espanoles, indios, mestizos, color Quebrado, and Esclavos. It is also recollated into the number of married, single and widowed. (R. Perez) (1977)

Laws and ordinances governing tax exemptions granted to indios in specific Cases- specific goods, the fruit of their labor, material used to earn their living. Notes that mestizos, mulatos and Negros Libres are not exempt in this manner. (R. Perez) (1977)

An order concerning Indian pueblos covering the following topics- pueblos in existence more than 10 years must give up the ancient practice (doesn't apply to those Younger than 10 years); that Indians in these pueblos have the same rights as Espanoles; that professional gamblers and venders of liquor are Barred from Indian pueblos; access to adjoining lands is protected; and that all citizens (except the officials) are obligated to work this land. Due to criminal activities of Vagabonds of every class, the governor prohibits anyone from leaving their town or area of residence without an official license or permit. Several other documents on 1778 reel deal with Vagabonds. (T. Barnes) (1977)

Assignments of guards and escorts for the semana Santa (due to the repeated assaults of enemy indians). Contains lists fo citizens responsible for each church. There is definite status-ranking involved with the justicia mayor and capitan comandante getting the 1st shift at the largest church. (R. Perez) (1977) others- 0235-0237- Parral; 4 de Abril, 1781.

Testimony of those in the process of carrying out the punishment of three men (probably Spaniards) who aided in the escape of an Indian. The punishment is extremely severe and degrading- paraded through Parral on burros; given 200 lashes by 2 Tarahumaras (who, as a prisoners, functioned as executioners); sentenced to eight years at hard labor. Marriage and burial costs. Differentiated as follows- marriages of Spaniards (19 pesos 4 reales), marriage of mestizos, mulatos (9 pesos 4 reales). Burial of adult Spaniards (13 pesos); Young Spaniards (9 pesos 4 reales); adult mestizos, mulatos and Negros (11 pesos 4 reales); Young mestizos (6 pesos 4 reales). (R. Perez) (1977)

Lucio worked in Navarro's store, and stole a piece of linen (Bretana). He gave it to a slave (Joseph) who gave it to Juana (navarro's Cook). Apparently these two didn't know it was stolen. Lucio later retrieves the cloth. An interesting and enterprizing crime involving people of different social stations. Has implications of a conspiracy against el patron. (R. Perez) (1977)

The Alcalde mayor raids a card game attended by many men of diverse qualities and stations. Indios and gente de Razon alike are hauled off to jail. According to their confessions, it seems everybody always lost. (R. Perez) (1977)

A very interesting, but seemingly endless, criminal proceeding against an Indian slave accused of diverting pieces of silver to a mulato Esclavo who worked in a smelter. The defense rests on the minor status of the mulato Esclavo and a large number of petitions request release. The fiscal takes a personal interest in the case and orders the two to submit to torture - therefore the confessions should be treated with caution. Both defendents are sentenced to be sold at auction and to be sent to work in a Mortero. (C. Needham) (1975)
