Military Honors

Documents concern an all out military campaign and very well organized raid against Nortenos and Apache Indians. Indian prisoners of the Spaniards play an important role in attacks against the Indian rancherias. Diaries of the campaign give full description of how raids were carried out. Military official in charge of the expedition requests stipends for Indian guides who proved loyal to the Spaniards. Document contains some unrelated information dealing with mission's supplies and military appointments. Brief mention of Indian language interpreters. (M. Marroquin, August 1988)

Viceroy Guemes Pacheco sends orders to comandante general demotions, leaves of absence, retirements due to injuries. Directed to various officers and military personnel from different presidios and provinces. Letter from viceroy to different heads of presidios to help, protect, attend to Lord Eduardo Fitzgerald, cousin of Duke of Richmond, during visit to Nueva Espana. (A. Dell'acqua, October 1987)

Correspondence between Pedro Fueros and virrey concerning mining operations at la Cieneguilla, Sonora. Includes routine documentation of quantities of gold produced and transported to Alamos, plus accounts of depredations suffered by Indians, settlers and miners at hands of Apache marauders. Virreynato orders detachment of troops to be relieved by another detachment; two detachments are to go to Guadalaxara in October and November. Rengel advised to liquidate estate of Neve and send it to Maria Pereyra. Dominguez to be given alcaldia in reward for valor and services. expediente being sent to excuse hazenderos of Nueva Vizcaya from excise taxes due to drought. Ugarte y Loyola's salary agreed on and sent to him. Arce sent to provincias as sargent. Ugarte y Loyola thanks virrey for salary. Various officers are promoted and sent to new posts. (D. J. Documents relating cowardice of soldiers and settlers of Valle de Santa Rosa, Coahuila, in which they left four soldiers and three civilians fighting, causing death of seven men. Request from gobernador to send troops to help the few men in presidios against hundreds of Apaches. Inventory of California missions and request for more religious supplies. Document from king issuing a bonus to survivors of battle of Rancho Becerra for their valor and stipends for widows of those killed. (A. Dell'acqua, March 1988)

Concerns replacements of military official in presidios; permit granted to soldier to be dismissed from service due to war injuries; petition of military Official, for presidio in San Bernardino, San Diego, Loreto and Monterrey; military official asks for his reinstatement; account of military official on duty in Provincias Internas; military official is assigned 500 pesos a year for honorary services defending Texas; Croix, gives notice of health improvement to viceroy, and thermal bath is prescribed for him; correspondence is requested to be sent via Guadalajara, which operates every two weeks. Mention of 6000 pesos reserved annually for use of governor of Nueva Mexico for these purposes. Other horses, mules, carbines, medals, ammunition, cloth, glass beads, steel knives, etc.; salaries of Indian leaders; arms to be given to Comanches; weapons obtained by Indians from Luisiana; orders from Ugarte to Beregana regarding remission of funds from Chihuahua to Anza; orders from Ugarte to Anza regarding receipt and use of funds; medals to be awarded to various Indian leaders includes Anza's response to Ugarte's orders and acknowledgement of receipt of annual funds for 1787. Additional responses from Anza's successor (Concha) concerning Anza's overspending and asking for an additional 2000 pesos to cover excess. Mention of campaigns against Apaches. Ff. 159v-162 is a detailed account of goods purchased for Indians in tabular form. Also includes order from Ugarte to Diaz de Hortega concerning Anza's overexpenditure and measures to correct this. Orders to Concha and Abilitado at Santa Fe regarding same situation. Response from Beregana to Ugarte acknowledging orders and reporting compliance. Also includes report from Ugarte to Florez of situation. Letter from marques de Sonora to the comandante-general informing him of king's approval of steps taken. Auto from Beregana relating activities of royal treasury at Chihuahua. Ff. 0173-0192 is and informe giving detailed account of uses of money and the situation in Nueva Mexico from Ugarte to Florez.
