Concerns payment supposedly owed Jayme Gurza for work done in military Hospital in Texas as surgeon and apothecary, he claims he is owed for work done on both jobs, although he was only payed for being surgeon; his salary of 720 pesos annually in Monclova not enough, but lack of documentation means he cannot receive money; turns out he was lying about amount of time he worked at Former Hospital anyway. Series of letters dealing with medicines needed in the military Hospital of Arispe. Discussion that medicines should be bought in open market (Venta publica). Mention that medicines were sent via Chihuahua, and viceroy responds that they should have gone via los Alamos because it would be cheaper. (J. Tapia, February, 1988)

Comandante Garcia Alexo informs virrey of bad living conditions of military in that part of the province, that is, no supplies, no weapons, no horses; Garcia Diego informs virrey of possible illegal introduction of contraband tobacco; relacion contains salary of military, expenses of the military Hospital, expenses of the different missions from Tarahumara, Parral and Nueva Vizcaya, and the totals. Garcia informs virrey about several attacks from the Indians on Provincia de Nueva Mexico. (D. Bautista, July 1990)

Ff.491-493 real Alencaster is relieved of his duties in government of Nueva Mexico (apparently fired). F.494 Navarro is being transferred to Hospital in Monclova; given passport for entire family, defensive arms for trip. Ff.495-503 are requests by Arredondo, Arreola, Llorente for supplies for presidios, special mention of Tula, Chontla. Ff.504-506 Puertas writes vaguely of political angst, poor morale since death of Aromeivia. (A. Dean, December 1989)

Pharamacist ferreira is searched for and ordered back to Spain to be reunited with his Mujer; he was originally sent to Arispe by Revilla-Gigedo to the military Hospital, then he moved to Mexico City to run a civilian pharmacy. The viceroy begins to track him down in 1800 and finally catches up to him in 1803 in Mexico City. He and his friends are required to swear they will comply with the order; ferreira is to liquidate his house in Arispe and the pharmacy. After several postponements he finally returns to Spain on August 8, 1803. Ff#209 gives a physical description of ferreira. One can assume that his Mujer was of the aristocracy as she had the viceroy declare his return an order. (E. Wilson, oct, 1989)

Primarily copies of correspondence between Bonavia, Cordero, Salcedo and virrey regarding defense of Texas border with Louisiana and plans to increase military personnel, artillery, bestias, almacenes, cuarteles, arms, etc. To effectively defend against U.s. land encroachment; included are various letters, to ship military supplies, discussion of local economies and how they will withstand such a population increase (Soldados), discussion of mistakes made by expedition of troops in 1806 and need for better planning and supplies this time, a brief discussion of factories to be established to employ various Indians in region; reference to four packages of gazetas de Nuevo Orleans and fact that communication with Louisiana is prohibited; one letter describes tribes of Indians in region and their way of subsistence (brief but informative); of particular (D. Expedientes requests beds for San Juan de Dios Hospital in Durango to take care of soldiers, 20 beds sent; regimento de dragones established in Durango; difficulties in housing soldiers and horses expressed, lack of pasture; bishop works out arrangement so horses can graze on local hacienda; 470 rifles with bayonets are received in Durango; three soldiers jailed after deserting dragones to join other regimento, other soldier jailed after selling his equipment; 100 more rifles requested for ranchers; money requested and received to put 470 rifles in working order; grouping includes volume index nos. 1-4 (p.
