Similar instructions as in 0508-0516 regarding the settlement of the Sumas (Indians) in the jurisdiction of el Passo, in an attempt to placate them after an uprising. The preceding order was to Valverde y Cosio the commanding officer of el Passo. This, almost identical communication, is to the marques de la Penuela, governor of New Mexico. (Lloyd Kendall) (1980)

Following a recent uprising of the Suma Indians, the Spaniards are attempting to placate and settle the discontented tribes. This is an order from the viceroy to Valverde y Cosio, commanding officer of el Passo, regarding the decision of the council for the Indian settlements. Valverde y Cosio is instructed regarding the accommodation of the Indians in locations pleasing to themselves, the distribution of agricultural tools and allotment of land, in attempt to engage the Indians in agricultural cultivation, so as to keep them occupied, constructively, and so reduce the chances for further uprisings. A very involved suit between the marques de la Penuela and Cuerbo y Valdes; charges against Valdes by councilmen and soldiers, that during his entire governorship he had altered the accounts and unfairly paid them low prices for their merchandise; that he was guilty of tyranny, extracting forced labor from residents by threatening them with hanging; that he was a violent man, a number of whose servants and slaves wished to leave him. Also, at the time of the assumption of the governorship by the marques, the handing over of the power was accompanied by violent disagreement between himself and Valdes as to who should pay certain expenses. There is also a charge that the marques was the instigator of an Apache raid on livestock of Valdes. The papers here are incomplete and the outcome of the suit is not given. (Lloyd Kendall) (1980)

Petition form pobladores of Sombrerette and Zacatecas for refund of 4,600 pesos to Diego Vargas who referred it to Pedro Rodriguez Cubero (new gobernador and capitan general). He ruled in favor of pobladores. Mention made of Mala cosecha. (R. Saba) (1980)

This long informe gives a complete account of the mission de Nuestra Senora del Pilar. It was sent by fr. Juan de Dios de Larrondo to fr. Antonio de Vebina, and speaks of the govierno politico and espiritual de los indios including the gastos and the limosna a los pobres, etc. This is an original document with the autograph of fr. Expedition to find the most favorable corridor through the Sierra Florida. Encountered 100 enemies (Apaches) with their families; entered into battle, wounding many. Caught another group with an infinite harvest of Mescal, they attacked, killing one Apache. Expedition hit by grave epidemic. Each employee is listed, with his position and salary (in the form of wage and rations) and his debts (advances of goods). Also contains the earnings of the hacienda from its produce and the mill.
