Haciendas (Inventory)

Documents concern remaining tax to be collected on goods brought in by hacienda Amoles administrator as supplies and wages for peones. Alcabala collector requires administrador Valiente to present his financial records to verify quantities and prices for determination of outstanding tax to be paid. Detailed lista de generos (frame #9, within expediente) specifies numbers and references to pertinent sections of recopilacion, discussion of fines to be imposed if taxes underpaid, and receipts for taxes already collected. Muniz sends a relacion to Santianes of the importe del diezmo explaining in detail what positions they have, what has been sold, and what has been collected. All the information will be send to reales Caxas de San Luis Potosi. The king sends a letter to virrey giving approval to the establishment of the new Obispado. Areche informs virrey about the collection of Diezmos in Nuevo Santander by the administrator and gobernador. iglesia metropolitana sends a letter to virrey stating that they agree to make the accounting of the new bishopric separate. Suggests products be exempt from pago de alCavala (taxes for crossing interprovincia borders). Sagarnaga's notification that he has inventoried hacienda missions of California. (R. Fragment of unsigned letter (presumably by Santianez) complaining of mistreatment in his arrest. Letter from Sierragorda accusing Indians of fabricating rumors while intoxicated, being untrustworthy. Discusses Indian hostilities that precipitated, accompanied evacuation of San Juan, now interfere with repopulation. List of all residents of San Juan hacienda (wives named also), their positions, relationships, weapons, servants. Gives number of people (120 in 48 families), animals, spare weapons; preparations for defense. Although Indians offer 100 insults during repopulation, Spanish intend to preserve harmony, resume reduccion attempts. Mentions that Noriega is Santianez' Brother. (A. Dean, July, 1989)

Correspondence between Torija and virrey concerning military issues in Chihuahua. Issues include Apache menace to frontier, discussion of conditions to be fulfilled by indios barbaros prior to signing of future peace treaties; disposition of captured indios infieles; reform of military organization in Chihuahua; Torija petitions virrey for command of flying company.
