Summary
Order form the gobernador prohibiting the entry of any non- Indian into Indian pueblos. He establishes the penalty-a 200 peso fine, 200 lashes and hard labor in the mines. These documents, perhaps of considerable interest to researchers interested in conditions of unfree labor in Nueva Viscaya, refer to the case of an Indian woman and her child who are sold at public auction for Ten years of servitude as a result of their presumed compliance in a recent uprising. A declaration of the accused is provided - taken by an illiterate interpreter and a Scribe - in which the Indian woman reveals her confession. Accussed of fleeing illegally from arrest, the the woman asserts that she was merely attempting to keep her child from being taken to Mexico. (C. Needham) (1975)
