Summary
Correspondence on new governor to be instructed by Cuellar; mention of conflict between Cuellar and Aguero; petition by Cuellar to go back to Tarahumara and leave expedition in charge of captain of Durango; concern about his Brother being replaced in battalion of savoya. Description by Rodriguez of unfortunate situation with Indians in Monclova and Santa Rita. Cuellar reports of his situation and that of his troop, and of his encounters with Indians to Croix. Part of diary by Leizaola reporting in detail the situation of his troops in following tracks of Apaches near Chiguagua. Cuellar congratulates Faini as new governor of Nueva Vizcaya and tells him of his plans related to military expediton, also describes in detail clashes with Apaches, their military tactics, explains why he does not follow order given by visitador general in war against Indians, mentions failure to capture Indians who attacked Chihuahua and imprisonment of three Indian women, and death of Ten Young people due to smallpox (?). Statement of Cuellar's distrust of Indians, and of reduction to be achieved through weapons. Governor of Coahuila speaks as representative of viceroy; mention of composition of military companies to fight for Nueva Vizcaya and of Francisco Cuellar's military history. Copy of correspondence between Cuellar and captain of San Buenaventura concerning discussion of threats made by Indian enemies and military tactics for their reduction; emphasis on importance of exterminating them. Cuellar's diary of happenings in expedition at his charge terrain, of military organization, of encounter with Indians, war tactics, endurance of soldiers and auxiliaries, provisions, injured and dead soldiers and Indians, description of difficulties encountered in clashes with Indians, mention of Indian spies and information given by them, information of other military officials doings.
