Two representaciones by Hijosa to Bucareli. Ff. 277-279 request viceroy to advise Audiencia to send 30-40 presidiarios to clear land around San Blas for settlement. Ff. 280-282 ask permission of viceroy for Hijosa to appoint contramaestros and guardianes of navy equally from Europeans and native born. Hijosa supports native born who often have greater navigational abilities. Reply from Bucareli is follow regulation procedures. (J. M. Johnson, may 1988)

Originals, copies. expeditions carried out by the two following companies; primera compania de la colonia del Nuevo Santander under the command of serna for the period January 18, 1791 - March 28, 1791; segunda compania Volante de la colonia del Nuevo Santander under the command of murgier for the time period of January 22, 1791 - March 14, 1791 and additionally a unit of 72 men from 3 villas under the command of quintanilla for the period January 12, 1791 - March 13, 1791; gives details of areas explored, place names given to certain geographical areas, numbers of soldiers, supplies and weapons totals, narration of encounters with indians, information on the use of militias, nature of topography and climate; virrey conde especially happy with the last expedition commanded by quintanilla; letter stating that Pedro Jose has killed two settlers but has not been apprehended, uses the san cristoval mission for refuge; letter to vaamonde advising him to be on the lookout for Pedro Josef and naparan - misquite indians wanted for murder; letter stating that Apaches are entering the northern villages of area in late August and describes attacks so far experienced. Contingent of soldiers to conde de Revilla gigedo, preparing for a visit from conde de Revilla gigedo; nava informs of peace or better said armistice reached with lipanes vaamonde relays this info to conde and requests further instructions; detailed explanation of the peace convention reached between lipanes and Spanish with articles posed by the Spanish and indian responses to them. Articles touch on subjects of captives, geographic demarcation of settlement, land, lipane responsibility for making sure that all in their population are within the reduccion, alliance with Spanish, judicial jurisdiction, Castro orders contingent of men and details quantity of munitions and supplies to bring to go to Rio Grande area in order to battle indians; copy of letter that first appeared in file 162ah, i between ff.448-454 describing attack on Castro by escaping lipanes; further information on contingent of men requested by Castro; vaamonde writes to conde de Revilla gigedo presenting a case for the reinstitution of the two companies that were disbanded by ugalde in nuebo reyno de leon; vaamonde writing on the state of affairs with regards to military situation in nuevo leon, makes mention of failed efforts of his predecessor ugalde to reach a durable accord with Apaches, inability of military to properly defend the area, request for weapons. Lipanes that include corn and salt; attempted meeting between sas and commandante general will not occur until sas receives word on lipanes in San Antonio; aga informs military that sas is not authorized to accept or reject peace that is responsibility of canoso and he is currently occupied with war against other nations; another obstacle to peace is the accusation by lipanes that ugalde aided comanches against lipanes; lipanes request gunpowder; munoz states that he has gotten cooperation from lipanes and seeks nava's cooperation in supplying indians with some of the goods requested, possible French involvement in the intertribal wars among indians; letter informing that munoz has come to an agreement with lipanes de arriba and has sent emissaries from this last group to persuade the lipanes de Abajo to comply by resettling where they previously were - the other side of Arroyo del atascoso; has authorized the use of force (aided by Spanish supplies) to compel lipanes de Abajo to accept peace treaty, also mentions possible use of comanches to do the same is another option; talks of some of the military obstacles that May be encountered in forcing lipanes; meeting held with sias and others with translators explaining peace treaty and their acceptance of the same. Summary
Concerns Ugarte's claims that Ugalde has misused authority by making extraordinary requests of officers under Ugalde's command. Also, Ugarte says presence of Ugalde's troops endangers present peaceful relations with Indians. Ugalde moving troops to El Paso where Mescaleros are formalizing a peace request. Virrey says Ugalde was told to keep governor of Coahuila informed and asks Ugarte to advise him of situation. Includes several oficios regarding Ugalde's presence there and a copy of Rengel's letter to Ugarte regarding summons to El Paso by Ugalde. Includes copies of Ugalde's requests for troops and horses. says Ugalde never conferred with him. Contains Arzes' account of movement of troops and geographic description of area and water sources. Provides number of people, ranches and governing leaders of Comanches and other tribes in area. Describes activities of and campaigns against Indian tribes in area. Provides dates of peace agreements. says needs more military supplies. Provides information regarding military and Indian losses and locations and activities of troops on certain dates. Detailed description of relations with several tribes. says displeasure arose from previous virrey's refusal to acknowledge Ugalde's insubordination and the serious setbacks suffered under his command. says Ugalde misguided Florez and violated many important peace pacts with Mescaleros. Provides description of conditions of Ovedsitas and Toacanas, enemies of Apaches. Mentions territories of tribes. says he established peace with Comanches who also assist in Apache destruction. Describes conditions of peace or war with different Apache branches. Mentions some tribes are Christian. Navajos have broken alliance with Gilenos and no longer conduct raids as was condition before comandancia was divided due to lack of knowledge of these relations. says this event offended Indians who returned to agression. says Texas and Coahuila should return under on command and Leon can defend with own troops led by governors. Concerns agreements made by Ugarte and Ugalde and current conditions and military events in provincias. Concerns best plan for defense and cooperation in both areas. Discusses troop movement and relocation for mutual assistance. Informs virrey that to comply with his request, some companies and half of compania volante have been transferred to Ugalde leaving several areas very weak. says just as troops left, Mescaleros began raids. Mescaleros continue to raid although some troops not in use by Ugalde. says Ugalde has greatest portion of soldiers yet does not protect. Includes copies of correspondence with Ugalde. Sends virrey information regarding first positive effects of agreements.
