An interesting document which provides an account of the residencia commission which inquired into the conduct of the office of the Alcalde mayor. In addition to testimony, a comprehensive list of the questions asked by the commission is included, providing insight into the expectations of the government regarding the duties of the Alcalde mayor. The finding here not favorable. This document and others, appearing at least once a year, provide good material to illustrate the long arm of the Audiencia and its control over officials on the frontier. Although Juan Fernandez de Carrion was suspected or accused of some Mal practice, he came off clear. The charges brought against him (mis-use of funds and favoritism) proved not to be substantial. The nature of the questions by Francisco de Lemos and the responses by the witnesses is interesting. (T. Barnes) (1975)

Valdez is accused of everything from nepotism to murder and on the other hand, highly praised. This is a protest-appeal against an old judgment made by Diego Guajardo Fajardo in favor of Diego de Galareta and against Juan lorezo. The residencia is still looking into ex-gov. Guajardo's actions and hear this appeal.
