Military Salaries

Concerns Cosio, promoted from soldier to Alferez of third company of Nuevo Santander, who attempts to straighten out issue of which was first official day of promotion and therefore of higher salary; Series of similarly formatted letters from various treasury and other officials all offering same interpretation of 'orden' of 3-20-1782, that promoted individual should collect new salary 'desde el Dia del cumplase del capitan o comandante general de exercito o provincia.' Includes 4 unrelated expedientes, numeros 26-29. In numero 26, Lasaga explains he has contracted several illnesses in past 5 years, would like 'licencia' to seek treatment in Mexico City. In 27, Precy presents impressive military service history, including campaigns, battles fought home and abroad, in effort to secure appointment as commander in company of Nuevo Santander. In 28, Lacomba requests forwarding of 2 and a half 'pagas' from Caxas matrices in order to travel to newly assigned location; Crespo finds request reasonable, suggests 'descuento' of one-third of future 'pagas' until amount repaid. In 29, Landazuri named justicia mayor of Croix; ambiguity in title of his present position noted. (L. Kerr, June 1989)

Miscellaneous documents, including lists of arms, funds and papal bulls sent to San Luis Potosi from Nuevo Santander. F. 230-231 gives a list of the number of arms (Espadas, Lanzas, caravinos). F. 133 gives a list of the number of bulas. F. 134 gives total cost figures. F. 134 also gives an account of the total money received pertaining to the creation of new missions. F. 236 is a list of prices paid for Indians, of cargo costs, and of costs of founding new missions. F. 237 advises payment of money to six needy families. Other documents concern amount of money assigned to various missions and the salaries paid to soldiers. Ff. 139-140 are especially important as it contains the monthly cost breakdowns for the years 1777, 1778, and 1779. (P. Lenz, September 1989)

Documents concern the transference of a group of Meco Indians from San Luis Potosi to Mexico under the commission of Pasqual de Burgoa. Request for a doctor to attend a gravely ill Indian. Payment of expenses incurred in transportation of Indians, in the salaries paid soldiers accompanying them, and of expenses in feeding the Indians during journey. Also given are a few baptisms along the way. Especially important are a group of lists concerning the Indians and the payment of the soldiers. Folios 171-173 contains an extensive list of the salaries paid soldiers and Cavos. folio 174 contains a list of expenses in transporting and feeding of the Indians. Folios 176-177 gives a list of Indian groups and the men and women who comprise the separate groups. (P. Lenz, September 1989)

First folio lists all titles, lands of king Carlos, then names Dufay as Alferez Segundo in Monterrey company. F. 522 lists full name, all titles of Florez on printed form documenting Dufay's promotion to Alferez Primero in Nuevo Leon volante; includes elaborately drawn coat of arms for Florez. Letters concerning Dufay's retirement, cessation of pay. F.541 mentions Dufay in charge of reduccion of San Christoval Indians, who fled to Sierra Madre; mentions Indian spies (no specifics). (A. Different letters concerning military advance payments, Urresti designation as protector of Guadalupe; permission for gobernador de Nuevo Leon to come to Mexico to recuperate from an illness. royal decree dated February 17, 1787 that those who seek to leave their position for whatever reason, may transfer but will not be paid. Meeting of the real hacienda to inform the virrey of military officers requests for pay in advance. (D. Bautista, October 1989)

Concerns procurador Rodriguez Balda, requesting assistance for Indians while they remain in Mexico City; military letters seeking pay, promotions, loans and resignations; letter from Juan Ballesteros Regidor of Monterrey requesting pardon from virrey; Fuentes Vicente, Clerigo requesting the grade of licenciado from virrey;bishop of Nuevo Reyno de Leon request permission from virrey to retire and leave his place to the assistance; military letters requesting permissions to retire, payments and loans. Concerns Gonzales de Santianes' salary that he did not receive first six months of 1773 as governor and captain, his request for money and real Caxa's interpretation of circumstances and denial of money; also concerns Gonzales' promotion to Theniente Coronel after Lorca y Villena vacated position. Concerns delay in transport of three criminals from San Thiago del Saltillo to San Luis de la Paz due to Coronel of legion of San Carlos refusing to give Alcalde mayor of San Luis Potosi four soldiers and one Coronel to accompany them on trip; content limited, quantity of documents extensive for subject matter; no mention of crimes committed by prisoners. Concerns payment of soldiers in San Phelipe presidio for two previous years; also concerns petitions for decrease in local Alcavalas in various regions; includes letters to local tribunals expressing concern about possible uprisings among poor due to increase in Alcavala; also includes petitions for money for seeds from same regions.
