Phelipe de Neva forms a detachment of Opatas to be stationed at Bacoachi to help against the Apaches. Pay scale, instructions for discharge, recruitment, dress (naked), enlistment (8 years) weapons, etc. Very good document. This item is copy of item entered as DRSW no.4870. (T.n.) (1975)

Eighteenth century, original copy of Rubi statistical table. Table showing presidios, location, captains, troop strength and type, number of horses and their condition, founding dates, and budgets. Gobernador marques de Aguayo (1/12/1715) recommends that Joseph Urrutia who lived with Texas Indians for 7 years, led them in war and still retains their confidence after 20 years among Spaniards, be commissioned to explor Gran Quivira for 3-4 months in preparation for later conquest, colonization. Fiscal Espinosa (5/24/1715) advises virrey to deny request for exploration of Gran Quivira. Junta de guerra in Mexico City (7/3/1715) order Aguayo and Urrutia to supply more information about proposed expedition (typical bureaucrats). Aguayo (11/9/1719) replies that according to Indian from interior Urrutia interrogated, Gran Quivira about 1 months journey from Texas Indians, very rich, possessing big lake and populated by Tecla, padoca Indians. If Gran Quivira is to be conquered, Aguayo believes 40,000- 50,000 Texas Indians and confederates would assist Spaniards. Offers to send 10-12 armed men along with Urrutia. Fiscal Espinosa (1/11/1716) asks for informe from Urrutia concerning proposed expedition. (T. Sheridan) (1977)

Declaracion of officers concerning Asinay, Cadodacho Indians. Note Asinay rebellion, repeating information found in other declaraciones. State buffalo range infructuoso, range plants unsuitable to livestock. Describe various military endeavors to reconnoiter area, especially rivers. Note fatigue of soldiers, poor state of horseherd, lack of arms, clothing, other supplies. Briefly discuss Cododacho political organization, settlement pattens. Note abandonment of missions among Asinay, inability of Franciscans to convert them. Describe scattered settlement patterns of Asinay, making it hard for missionization, reduccion to take place. Mention custom of Asinay to call each other texa, meaning friend. Describe expedition under command of capitan Martinez, composed of 20 soldiers, 10 muleteers, 300 well-armed Jumano auxiliaries, although Jumanos act more or less independently. (T. Sheridan) (1977)

Concerning controversy between fray Gonzalez, gobernador Almazan over state of presidios in Texas, marques de Aguayo notes that presidial soldiers not given their salaries directly because they would squander it on juegos y mugeres without buying food. Discusses Apache hostilities, various Spanish legal restrictions concerning war against Indians. Mentions proposal to gather soldiers from Coahuila, Espiritu Santo, Rio Grande del Norte, San Antonio presidios to campaign against Apaches- such company to be composed of 80 Spaniards, 100 Indian auxiliaries. Because of peace with French, gobernador Almazan feels 30 soldiers could be spared from Adaes presidio. (T. Sheridan) (1977)
