Summary
Garcia Cano, retired presidial teniente with 38 years of service, seeks employment with Renta de Tabaco because his pension is so small. Writing in margins, Bonavia states that Garcia Cano not qualified to be appointed capitan or to any other branch of royal service. Also recommends that Garcia Cano's son not be given employment because of his notoria Mala conducta. virrey therefore denies petition. (T. Sheridan, March 1990)

Summary
Gabiola seeks appointment as gobernador Interino of Nuevo Santander. Noting scarcity of qualified personnel, however, Bonavia suggests Gabiola be appointed gobernador Interino of Nueva Mexico instead. States that most frontier military personnel lack skills, experience to combat invasion of disciplined army. Notes that Anglo-Americans threatening Texas and could threaten Nueva Mexico as well. Points out that talented frontier leaders like Urrea, Garcia de Texada, Lopez have already been transferred south. (T. Sheridan, March 1990)

Ugarte y Loyola and Alegre explain condition of provinces of Sonora, Nueva Mexico, Nueva Viscaya, including administrative, political, military and religious aspects. Ugarte y Loyola persuaded that containment of enemies impossible unless military border forces augmented. Reports of decadent state of agriculture, commerce, and military. Report of advancements made in peace with Cumanches, Yutas, and Navajoes. Reports that correspondence from New Mexico and Texas governors has ceased since his taking office. Reports of leaving position of comandancia de Armas to Rengel. Notes that Lafora's map has been corrected. Detailed tables (f.110-111) showing condition of California --naming presidios, capitanes, comandantes, auxiliary officials, number of sargents, Cabos, and soldiers that compose each presidio.
