Military Campaigns

Document are service records and biographies of Olguin, Armenta, Adriano, and Casares. Time of service, honors to be received, personal statistics (height, weight, religion, etc.), and brief military record given for each. Folios 9, 12, 13 all treat of campaigns against Indians and the killing of various Gandules in these campaigns. (P. Lenz, February 1989)

Index to administrative correspondence (1743-1767) treating matters which include discussion of campaign against Apaches; transferring presidio San Xavier to jurisdiction of San Saba; mission establishment in Reyno de Leon; pearl fishery on coasts of Californias; destruction of friendly Cumanche ranch; reduction of Jaquis to San Buenaventura; means to liberate Nueva Viscaya from enemy invasions (J. Index and extractions of expedientes, introduced by Ugarte y Loyola, containing abundant administrative, military and religious information about provinces Coahuila, Nuevo Leon y Nuevo Santander. This particular Series deals with legajo 13, quaderno 10, 1766. Upon orders of Galvez, Ugarte y Loyola submits index to Nava who remits them to Castro. Topical listings in indice include missions, new Orleans, presidios, prohibition of saltpetre and gunpowder, governor salaries, building materials, criminals, tobacco, desertion, Yslas Blancas, campaigns against Indians, house sales in Penzacola, virreys, Santander, pearls, and mines. Document concerns Redondo's request for promotion to rank of capitan of Cuerpo de milicias de Caballeria de Mazatlan. Redondo's colleagues provide testimonials regarding his exemplary service record and good conduct. F.128 mentions Redondo's role in 1810 insurrection at Zacatecas and his role in reconquest of Zacatecas. F.133 speaks of Arredondo's role in 1814 campaign resulting in defeat of rebels in Sierra. F.139 mentions dispersing insurgents from Punta de las Barrancas. Ff. 150-152 detail Redondo's role of putting down insurrection en frontera de Rosario. final folios are testimonials from Redondo's vecinos and their praise of troops under Redondo's command and good behavior of said troops. Garay requests retirement with rights of Fuero militar and use of uniform. F. 115 gives service record of Garay with list of companies he served in, ranks held, and campaigns waged. Ff. 115 -116 speaks of action contra rebels at San Andres de Teul and the loss of Zacatecas. Important facts stated concerning action at Zacatecas. Number of participants and armaments given. Action at Santiago de la Laguna describes length of battle and loss of life suffered. Number of participants and dead stated. F. 116 mentions Garay's liver disease. Dr. Muns verifies illness and describes it as escurbuto sifilitico. Symptoms of illness described. Cure prescribed by Muns. F. 118 is an important letter written by Garay in which he speaks of Hidalgo contubieron la insurrecion promovida Por el infame Hidalgo. Garay's role contra rebels from 1810-1813 at Zacatecas, Teul, Santiago de la Laguna, Huejucar, and tierra Blanca described throughout text. Combat statistics detailed often. (P. Lenz, may 1990)

Retirement granted to Lopez. F. 109 Lopez' describes inability to continue military career because of consumption. F. 110 details illness and describes symptoms of consumption. Informes by Lopez' superiors confirm illness and recommendation given that Lopez receive status of invalid. F. 111 filiacion of Lopez detailing personal characteristics and military service record. 1806 campaign mentioned and killing of three Gandules and recapturing of twelve horses. 1807 campaign results in death of three more Gandules. Ruiz de Larramendi requests retirement from compania presidial del San Elceario. F.105 details service record and mentions killing of Apache and freeing of captured women and Boy. 1799 expedition to Isla de Tiburones. 1810 speaks of Ruiz de Larramendi breaking leg attacking insurgents at Pasaje de Tapias. Informe by Dr. Muns confirms injury. Retirement granted. Ruiz de Larramendi requests permission to travel to Santander, Spain. Passport requested and state of Santander described. (P. Ezuain requests retirement with rank of teniente Coronel and salary of capitan. Service record stated. Loss of right arm in battle of Rocillo, Texas, fighting against american insurgents makes Ezuain unfit for continued military service. F. 51 details Ezuain's service in Texas and the battle of Rocillo. Both Rocillo and his doctor taken prisoner by american rebels. Bexar captured by enemies. F. 53 Garza, Ezuain's doctor, confirms Ezuain's injury and stay in Hospital and capture by americans. Elizondo testifies to Ezuain's loyal service and recommends his request to retire. F. 55 speaks of reconquest of Saltillo and campaigns against rebels. F. 56 especially noteworthy for detail of battle of Rocillo and attack by Anglo-Americans and Spanish. Other documents are testimonials from Ezuain's colleagues verifying his brave and loyal service. Last folios concern Ezuain's request of temporary license to go to Spain to visit parents. Arze requests retirement from military due to illness of consumption. Arredondo agrees to request. Due to retirement of Arze, Hoz and Espinosa promoted. Espinosa promoted to Primero Alferez of compania de Agua Verde. Hoz promoted to Segundo Alferez of said company. Document also relates formation of company in Bexar for security concerns. Amado, Santos, and Hernandez named capitan, teniente, and Alferez of newly-formed compania de Bexar. Other individuals named to posts of segunda compania de milicias de Bexar. F.48 speaks of battle of Medina. Individuals named to posts of primera compania de Bexar. Battle of Bexar and battle of Medina mentioned throughout document. (P. Lenz, may 1990)

Documents relate the establishment of compania de Patriotas Voluntarios de Tula and role of said company contra indios barbaros y Insurgentes. honors and service of company described. F. 29 tells of reconquest of Tula in 1811 and formation of compania de Patriotas Voluntarios. 1813 reconquest of Texas and battles of Bexar and Medina noted. Compania de Patriotas de Cadereyta granted right to form itself due to circumstances of insurrection. Torres approves of usefulness of establishing said company at Cadereyta. (P. Lenz, may 1990)
