Ugarte y Loyola repeats request (See sequence 24) that he be paid back wages for which he alleges he is owed; explains that he himself owes money, that wages from new governorship of Puebla apenas me ofrecen Una moderada decencia; presents military history again, hoping to demonstrate merit; claims that though his health not good, he has managed to fulfill all obligations to virrey and government, expects same in return; also, vasallos hungry, impoverished, in need of financial assistance; Galves passes request to virrey, but first is signed by many and various fiscales; request denied. Summary
Letter from Barragan, comandante de Cuerpo de Cavalleria de frontera, requests Gracia of use of military standards and insignia as reward for company's brave and loyal service. Barragan provides excellent geographic, demographic, and economic portrait of towns of Valles, maiz, and Rioverde. Military companies and campaigns against Indians mentioned. F. 223 mentions the extinguishing of part of Chichimeco population. Process of pacification said to be impeded by the vastness of the territory and scarce population upon it. Ff. 223-224 speaks of vasallos americanos and their superiority en los Ramos de industria y agricultura F. 224 speaks of Villa de Valles, its social organization, quantity of haciendas and ranches, occupations of inhabitants, pacification of Chichimecos, and taxes and tribute. F. 225 mentions Valle de maiz, its military settlers intent solely on destroying Indians, and the granting of land grants to these settlers. F. 225 deals with Rioverde, the pacification of the Chichimecos, their incorporation into life of San Luis Potosi. Mixed Spanish, Indian, and caste population of town mentioned and the number and income of its missions. Reasons for establishment of military companies, their size and quality stated. Troops from Nuevo Santander and Nuevo Reyno de Leon instructed to remain as auxiliaries in Texas. Vedia y Pinto requests retirement due to illness. F. 204 describes illness as dolor de pulmones. Calleja verifies said illness and approves request for retirement. Doctor Covarrubiastestifies to Vedia y Pinto's illness and describes it as callos de los Pies. F. 211 mentions Gomez de Castro's campaign against Mescales and the groin injury he suffered in that campaign. Request by Casanova and Bautista Romero for military retirement with fuero militar and uso de uniforme. illness and old age reasons for desire to retire. Military records given. F. 227 lists each military post held by Casanova. F. 227-228 gives detailed summary of major campaigns of Casanova. Battle of San Ignacio de Piantla and battle of Rio de San Pedro figure prominently. Massive details (date, place, length, number of dead and wounded) given for each battle. Killings and imprisoning of Gandules and Apaches also cited. Muno testifies to having given medical assistance to Casanova for his enfermedad nerviosa of the stomach and Head. Doctor describes his prescription for Casanova and deems Casanova unfit for continuance in military. Other documents concern Bautista romer's request for retirement. F. 230 lists record of his military employment and briefly acccounts his military campaigns. His role in attacks contra enemigos of Tucson stated.
