Land (Tenure)

Series of documents concerning the establishment of the settlement of San Bartolome. Land was acquired through comprise between Andres Hernandez and Luis Menchaca, who owned various parcels of the land. Copy of preceeding on the Actual acquisition are included. (M. Bowman) (1979)

Fathers and Indians are Charged with monopolizing land. This has resulted in the bad state in which the village finds itself. Plaintiffs feel that much of land is superfluous to needs of priests and Indians. (M. Bowman) (1979)

For the good of citizens of San Fernando, Barrios y Jaurigue has ordered that 1) all property owners apply for new titles; 2) discontinuance of the labor for corn; 3) discontinuance of trade between the Indians and the governor and soldiers. The citizens desire to repeal these acts, showing that the acts are beneficial to the town. Some information on crops grown. Shows relationships between various sectors of town. These are three letters, two by gov. Oconor and one by cap. Tovar addressed to fr. Gaspar de Solis regarding the hour for mass and other points of information. The two letters by oconor are dated may 16 and may 19 respectively of 1768, that by cap. Tovar was written from the presidio de Nuestra Senora de Loreto Bahia del Espiritu Santo, and is dated March 7, 1768. Tovars letter is 3 fol., these of oconor are 1 and 2 fol. Respectively. They are all originals having autograph signatures of oconor and Tovar. (microfilm catalog)

Sra. de Guadalupe de Zacatecas including Tomochi, Tutuaca, Moris, Batopilillas, Santa Anna, Chinipas, Guazapares, serocahui, hueguachic, Nabogame, Concepcion de Tubares, San Miguel de Tubares, Baburigame, Tonachi, Norogachi, baquiachi, encompassing 52 pueblos, 13,363 Pimas Altos, Tarahumares Altos, y bassos, Tubares, y Mexicanos. Also Tepehuanes. Geographical location, settlements, population, ethnic composition each mission given. Inhabitants Loreto Pueblo, mission Santa Anna, described as Tarahumaras Bajos who speak language called guarigia (warihio), el idioma entre Tarahumara y Yaqui. Inhabitants Tohallama Pueblo, mission buburigame, nacron Mexicana. States some Indians speak Spanish, but most understand/speak only native tongues, so missionaries instructed in Indian languages. Children instructed in Spanish in morning, in own language afternoon. Impossible to establish schools however because people leave settlements so often. Discusses inadequacy missionary stipend, need for Indians to raise food for priests (maize, wheat, beans, Chile). Because of nature terrain/climate, difficult to raise cattle, only serocahui mission has large herd. Describes amount crops raised communally at each mission.
