Cancio recommends to viceroy persons for positions of capitan,teniente, and Alferez in cavalleria miliciana he established at Monclova. Appointments made by officials in Mexico and notification sent to Cancio. Further list of personnel for cavalleria on F. 166. More on this matter on ff. 169, 170. Other correspondence from official (identity unknown) in Mexico to Cancio concerning administrative affairs, including pertrechos de guerra, reduccion de los indios Apaches, military campaigns against Indians, military regulations, auditor de la guerra, transfer of Barrios and Cancio, illegal commerce, wrongdoing by Barrios, and construction of carcel. Detailed draft(?) Letter to Cancio concerning Indian activities in Coahuila, desire for peace of some Indians, troops available to deal with Indian threat -- orders and plans for action, and attacks by Tejas and Cumanchas against Apaches. Summary
Collection of documents dealing with group of tahuacan Indians who request permission to travel to Mexico City to petition viceroy for a Spanish settlement on Rio Colorado near their people. Much discussion back and forth before permission is granted. Included is interview with Indians once in Mexico about relations with other Indians, their history, economy, etc. Discussion also on illegal trade in Texas. (T. Cederstrom, March 1987)
