The disreputable fellow, Mariano Baca, tells everyone that Maria Manuela de la Luz Romero has consented to be his wife and that they have slept together. To save her honor Maria proves to a church official she is yet a virgin and brings civil suit against Baca, which she wins. He gets nine months of jail in process and given court costs. (R.
