Melchor, Xemes Indian from la Isleta, is suspected in mysterious drowning of his wife, Catarina. Evidence scanty, though some testify to Melchor's having mistreated and been unfaithful to his wife. On sight investigation by initial Juez receptor, Juan Gonsalez Bas. Accused petitions gobernador for his release to care for his four orphaned sons. Summary
Catalina de Valdes is found battered and bloody, with grievous wounds to her face and Head. She Dies. There are no eyewitnesses to the cause of her wounds, and an attempt is made to pass off her death as being Accidental. But, the governor comissions general Hurtado to conduct an intensive investigation, which produces damning circumstancial evidence against Miguel Lujan, Husband of the deceased. Lujan maintains that he is innocent. The governor places him under arrest and sends him under escort of two soldiers on a long trip to Ciudad de Mexico, placing the case in the hands of the viceroy. On a stopover at the real de San Francisco de Cuellar (which has no proper prison), Lujan escapes and takes refuge in the church. There is an investigation of the escape. Summary
Velasco is accused of killing Herrera in his home (velasco's). He flees and takes refuge in a church and convent. He later admits to the authorities that he did hit Herrera, but claims that Herrera attacked him and he reacted in self-defense. Velasco's defense attorney is able to collect depositions testifying to Herrera's reputation as a wild and reckless man who often sought to provoke others, and further testimony to Velasco's reputation as a pacific and diligent citizen. The leave the Villa of Santa Fee, and that he put his labor and carpenter's skills at the service of the church and community. (Lloyd Kendall) (1980)
