Crimes (Murder)

Diego Martin leads a group of men in an attack on Diego del Castillo's hacienda, and they kill Diego del Castillo. At the end of the court process Diego Martin is executed an order of the governor. (R. Davis) (1977)

Cristobal kills Andres - after lengthy proceedings, in which Cristobals assigned public defender puts on a good show, Cristobal is convicted and sentenced to- 200 lashes, a Ride through the busy streets of town tied to a packsaddle, 3 years in the mines and 3 more years on a hacienda. All the monetary costs had to be paid by the Hacendado where Cristobal worked. (T. Barnes) (1975)

In a dispute at Gregorio's hacienda Juan Gomez Garcia kills Gregorio, and is sentenced to loss of his property and goods and a 2 years service as an ordinary soldier at the Rio Gordo presidio. (R. Davis) (1977)

Xtobal, Pablo and Diego kill capitan Sebastian de Barrios in a street brawl. The Brother Antonio brings charges of homicide and the 3 men are found guilty, lose all of their property and goods and tho condemned to death, are at last moment drafted into the army to fight the indios Enemigos. These documents provide good evidence of investigative techniques in criminal Cases. The teniente de la justicia mayor is dispatched to inquire into the circumstances of the death of Juan Bautista Berocal. A description of the body is recorded (death was caused by both sword and dagger wounds) and testimony is taken from acquaintances. Although the evidence is less than conclusive, Francisco Canedo is placed in the public jail and - as seems to be standard in such Cases - all of his property is impounded pending disposition of the case. This document provides the records of an investigation of a murder. Testimony is recorded from those who discovered the body of Gaspar de la Cruz, an Indian, lying in the road, an apparent victim of gun shot wounds. There follows a record of the disposition of the body, the rudimentary autopsy performed, efforts to fix the time of death, and testimony of acquaintances who might be able to provide information as to possible enemies of the victim. An interesting case which provides some insight into cross-cultural attitudes toward marital relations. The case concerns the murder of one Indian by another, the quarrel revolving around a woman. Testimony is provided through interpreters; the sentence was death by hanging; and records of the execution order (in the public Plaza) are included. (C. Needham) (1975)
