Issues concerning indios Indians in Coahuila for month of September, 1774. Establishment of towns Villa de Saltillo, Charcas and Matchuala as well as mission of San Carlos (ordered 100 mules). Index of documents (f.163) petition of widow to governador for pension from her deceased Husband's salary; letter granting Echeagaray responsibility of soldiers in Monterrey; letters discussing need for reconstruction of mine in real de Vallecillo; letter to procurador general of Monterrey concerning restitution of hacienda which is located in Indian village. Letters also include transportation of cloth (lienzos pintados) from las Islas Filipinas; military tables (149) with clear data on military rolls, salaries, occupations, equipment. (J. Mendinueta relates that prior calmness of Cumanches on frontier is gone. Relates Cumanche raids and murders. Complains of inefficiency of tracking Cumanches because of terrain and lack of water; tells of incident in which Apache guides were deceitful. Notes plains south of Colorado River unsuitable for settlement. Croix responds but has no suggestions on how to track Indian offenders. (S. Gibbs, July 1987)

Three letters sent together with index page. 1st states receipt of testimony from exchange of prisoners with Apaches. 2nd concerns testimony from residents of Amarillas who want Munoz removed from position as teniente. 3rd deals with review of militia, stating that area will be secure in case of invasion by Ingleses. Notes governor of California Barri's request 30 Spaniards to serve as soldiers, establish settlements, 100 Indians from Rios Sinaloa, Fuerte, Mayo to work mines. Magistrates 3 rivers instructed to persuade, but not force, Indians to migrate to California. States many Indians Rios Sinaloa, Fuerte lost fields, cattle to flood last October, may be induced to migrate to obtain new land. (T. Sheridan, 1976)

It is stated that Cananea is being abandoned for lack of minerals and not due to enemy Indians. People spread out through province searching for more mines, and it is impossible to protect all of them. People lack resources (money and tools) to adequately exploit mines. (J. Tapia, April, 1988)
