Summary
Communication concerning statements by Montoya to the effect that Hidalgo's insurrection was really in defense of the kingdom; for he (Hidalgo) had seen secret letters from the viceroy to the comandante general, which contained orders for the handing over of the provinces in his charge to the French emperor; and, Hidalgo, assuming that the viceroy had done the same with the rest of the kingdom, had reason for rising in war. Montoya associates these statements with a person of distinction in the Villa of Chihuahua. Salcedo directs the communication to someone who is expected to take appropriate action. (Lloyd Kendall) (1980)
