Summary
An issue which ebbed and flowed between the orders and secular church concerned the Diezmos. A tax on agriculture (those which had their origin in Spain such as cattle and wheat) and manufactured. General exemption from this tax had been granted to the Jesuits but once their work with the Indians became economically significant definitions and jurisdictional problems continually appeared these documents are all mainly concerned with the Jesuits defense of their privilege. Reports on having found two large houses which would be perfect for a new Jesuit colegio in Parral anticipating trouble from secular bishop, writer sets forth a law in the recopilacion which obligates viceroys to establish colegios in Principal towns in order to educate sons of Indian chiefs, and advocates this line be taken with viceroy.
