S. Naval Reserve ; began extended active duty on Sept. 22, 1941 ; later promoted to lieutenant ; for meritorious service in
the line of duty received the Order of the Purple Heart; aged 31 ; killed in action when the U. S. S. Sims, a destroyer on which he was serving, was lost in the Battle of the Coral Sea, May 7, 1942; previously reported missing in action ; presumptive date of death by Navy Department is May 8, 1943.
