JAMA, Apr 1961; 176: 160: Valles, Fred, Tucson, Ariz.; Universidad Mayor de San Marcos de Lima Facultad de Medicina, Peru, 1907; died in St. Mary's Hospital Dec. 10, aged 80, of carcinomatosis.

Steve Nash, PCMS (8/2010): Dr. Valles (1879-1960) delivered 3,000 Tucson babies. He was a scholar, poet, philosopher, scientist and world traveler. He spoke English, Spanish (born in Peru), Portuguese, Italian, French and Catalan [and German, Aymara and Quechua according to grandson, Felipe Jácome]. His son wanted to study agriculture at the UA, so he came to Tucson with his son, arriving during a smallpox epidemic. Immune to smallpox, he immediately stepped in. He saw an opportunity to set up a bilingual practice and stayed in Tucson. He practiced on South Sixth Avenue in a home that still stands. He became a US citizen in 1937. He was investigated by the FBI because he was known as Dr. Valles but his name was Dr. Frederico Valles-Vargas. They thought he was using an alias. He officially changed his name to Fred Valles during the 1930s. [Re: 1/13/1925 Minutes of the Pima County Medical Society, 1904-1954] The case before the medical board, if it happened, must have come to naught. Dr. Valles retired in 1944. He moved back to Peru for two/three years, but returned to Tucson, where he died.

Excerpts from the July 24, 2016 Arizona Daily Star obituary of Estela Argentina Valles de Jácome:
[Estela] was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, to Dr. Federico Valles Vargas, a renowned surgeon, and Emilia M. Lloret de Valles on July 27, 1914. ... Dr. Valles opened his practice [in Tucson] in 1922 in his house/office on the corner of 14th Street & South 6th Avenue as a family practitioner where he served a large Hispanic population until his death in 1960.
