"Surgeons fight back: Group drops 2 HMOs; veteran defects to realty" by Jane Erikson, Arizona Daily Star, October 3, 2004: "One of Southern Arizona's most respected surgical groups is fighting back against stagnant pay and accelerating insurance premiums, but one of its best-known surgeons is waving a flag of surrender. Dr. William Neubauer , 61, will see his last patient on Nov. 24, thus ending his 30-year career as a general surgeon. He's going into real estate instead. His liability insurance premiums have ballooned from $29,000 last year to $42,000 this year, and would increase to more than $80,000 on Dec. 1. At the same time, major health plans are paying Neubauer and the other seven surgeons in his group, Southwestern Surgery Associates, at the same rates or only slightly above what they were paying three years ago. As a result, the group has cut ties with PacifiCare of Arizona and UnitedHealthCare. Neubauer 's decision to retire early brings to 15 the number of physicians and surgeons who will give up their practices in Tucson this year, all of them stating the rising cost of malpractice coverage as the major reason, said Dr. Edward Miller, an obstetrician-gynecologist who helped start the Arizona Coalition for Patient Access earlier this year. ... Neubauer plans to go into real estate sales after he leaves his practice next month. He's already started reading a textbook. "I've been a surgeon for 30 years," he said. "I'm looking forward to doing something else."
JAMA, Nov 2000; 284: 2390: NEUBAUER, Darwin William, 86; Tucson, Ariz; Washington University School of Medicine, 1939; certified by the American Board of Surgery; died February 22, 2000.
