Atkinson, William Biddle. The physicians and surgeons of the United States. C. Robson, 1878, page 206: McPhail, Benjamin Grigsby, Fort Fred. Steele, Wyoming Territory, was born, Nov. 18th, 1844 at Pleasant Grove, Albemarle co., Va. He is the son of the Rev. B. G. McPhail, of Norfolk, Va.; was educated at the Norfolk military acad., and graduated from the med. coll. of Va., at Richmond; but in Oct., 1873, entered the army on account of ill health, having suffered from tuberculosis for a number of years. His physical condition debarring him from a commission, he was appointed acting ass't surg. He has made a specialty in some degree of diseases of the heart and lungs. He is a fellow of the Richmond acad. of med., of which he was secretary from Jan. 1st, 1872, to 1873; and of the Va. State med. soc.; an honorary fellow of the Salt Lake med. soc. He has contributed miscellaneous articles to the Virginia Medical Monthly and to the Clinical Record. In 1873 he was adjunct prof. of mat. med. in the med. coll. of Va.; and ass't coroner of the city of Richmond in 1872 and 1873. He was surg. to the Chesapeake & Ohio railroad in 1871, and from 1870 to 1871 med. examiner for the North American life insurance company. At present post surg. at Fort Fred. Steele, Wyoming Territory. Future home Salt Lake City, Utah.
