JAMA, Feb 1975; 231(7): 697: Former AMA president Dr. McCormick dies. Edward J. McCormick, MD, president of the American Medical Association in 1953-1954, died at St. Vincent Hospital in Toledo, Ohio on Jan 7 of internal hemorrhage resulting from a fractured hip sustained in a fall. Born on Sept 25, 1891, in Alger, Mich, Dr. McCormick obtained his medical degree at St. Louis University School of Medicine in 1915 and took his internship at St. Vincent's Hospital where he returned as a staff physician in 1922 after service in World War I. He never left St. Vincent's; from 1939 to 1949 he served as chief of staff and at the time of his death he was chairman of the advisory board. Dr. McCormick served as a member of the AMA's House of Delegates from 1943 to 1944. He became a member of the Council on Medical Service when it was formed in 1943 and served on it until 1947, the last two years as chairman. In 1947 he was elected to the Board of Trustees, named a member of the Committee on Scientific Exhibits (chairman in 1950) and appointed to the Council on Industrial Health. Dr. McCormick was the first president of Toledo's Board of Health from 1940 to 1943. He had been president and trustee of the Academy of Medicine of Toledo and Lucas County and president of the Ohio State Medical Association. [Includes photo.]
