July 22, 1998 Arizona Republic obituary (page 16):
DERRILL B. MANLEY, M.D. On Monday morning, July 20, Derrill B. Manley, M.D. passed away at St. Joseph's Hospital. Over his long and distinguished medical career, Dr. Manley dedicated himself to the improvement of medical care for Maricopa County, and the State of Arizona. He was born in Phoenix on May 11, 1923. He attended Phoenix Union High School. He received his B.A. from the University of California at Berkeley, and graduated from Stanford University School of Medicine in June of 1949. Dr. Manley served his country in all three branches of the Military, Army, Navy and Air Force. In his partnership with Dr. Running and Dr. Phillips, Dr. Manley provided pediatric care for many of the children of Phoenix. He served as Chief of Pediatrics for Maricopa County General Hospital from 1953 to 1961. In 1957 he created the Cooperative Integrated Pediatric Program which became the foundation for the current pediatric training program at the County Hospital. Most importantly, Dr. Manley was a tireless advocate for his patients and their families. After the bond Issue was approved in 1961 for construction of a new county hospital, he fought vigorously to see that the new facility was located centrally in Phoenix so patients and physicians alike could have access to this critical institution. In recognition of his efforts, the Derrill B. Manley, M.D. Community Education Resource Center was dedicated at the County Medical Center in 1993. … Memorials should be sent to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation and the Lupus Foundation. Services will be held at 11am on Thursday at the Trinity Cathedral, 1 14 W. Roosevelt, Phx, AZ.
