History of Howenstine High Magnet School, Tucson, Arizona: E. Jay Howenstine was an advocate for educating the handicapped. He first became interested in the field when a friend was injured in a trolley accident. Howenstine lived in Elyria, Ohio, and helped in the formation of the Ohio Society for Crippled Children. In 1933, he organized the first Easter Seal Campaign. The funds from that campaign went to the aid education of handicapped children. E. Jay Howenstine moved to Tucson in 1945 to retire. However, he noticed that people with disabilities did not have the resources available to function in society in the Old Pueblo. In 1953, Howenstine formed the Home crafters. This organization helped the handicapped to become self-supporting and able to work for living. In 1956, a school for those with disabilities was opened in Tucson. It was named Jay Howenstine in honor of his work. The school was later moved to its present site. Jay Howenstine School’s mission has evolved from a school of only handicapped students to, in 1997, include general education students also. The first year of integration saw the student population rise from one-hundred-forty to two-hundred. In 1999, the school was granted magnet status. It is the only Service Learning magnet in the entire country.
