Arizona Daily Star 9/16/2003 obituary: Dr. Donald Ferdnand Griess died suddenly at home at the age of 89, on September 9, 2003. He was born in Lincoln, Nebraska on August 24, 1914. He lived his early years in Nebraska. He attended the University of Nebraska earning a B.A. degree in 1937 and B.S. in 1939. He graduated from the University of Nebraska Medical School in Omaha in 1942. He had a fellowship in surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota from 1943 to 1947. During this time he earned a masters in surgery degree from the University of Minnesota. In 1947 he moved to Tucson where he practiced general surgery until he retired in 1983. During these years he served on the Arizona Blue Shield Branch for 11 years (1964-1975). He was President of Blue Shield for four years (1972-1975). He was Chief of Staff at St. Mary's Hospital for two years (1963-1964). He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Elizabeth; son, Donald R (Karen); sister, Margery (Russell) Parker and several nieces and nephews.
