Green, John R. Neurosurgery on the Frontier. Montana: The Magazine of Western History, 17 (3), Summer 1967, pages 18-29. From page 29: JOHN R. GREEN, M.D., chairman of the Clinical and Research Staff of the Barrow Neurological Institute, St. Joseph's Hospital, Phoenix, Arizona, presents a course each year at Arizona State University on the History of Medicine. The academic degrees of Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Medicine were conferred on him by the University of Puget Sound and Northwestern University, respectively. His internship and first year of residency in Neurology and Neurological Surgery were served in St. Luke's Hospital, Chicago, and the remainder of special training was received at the University of Illinois Research and Educational Hospitals in the Illinois Neuropsychiatric Institute. He served in the Medical Corps of the U.S. Naval Reserve in the United States and in the Philippine Islands during World War II. Certification by the American Board of Neurological Surgery was earned by examination in 1948. Dr. Green is now program director for training in Neurological Surgery at the Barrow Neurological Institute and also serves as an; associate examiner for the American Board of Neurological Surgery. He is a member of local, regional, national and international scientific organizations and has served as president of the Western Neurosurgical Society, the Western Institute on Epilepsy, and the Western Electroencephalographic Society. He was co-founder of the Barrow Neurological Institute, the Neurological Sciences Foundation, EpiHab, Phoenix, Inc., and laboratories of Electroencephalography in three Phoenix hospitals. He serves on the Board of Directors of the Federation of Western Societies of Neurological Science and of the Arizona Historical Foundation and has published thirty-six scientific articles, five historical articles and has been co-editor of two books, Epileptic Seizures and Horizons in Neurological Education and Research.
