DRAKE, Charles Rivers. Capitalist. Res. Long Beach; office Long Beach and Los Angeles, Cal. Born in Walnut Prairie, III., July 26, 1843; son of Charles and Mahala Jane (Jeter) Drake. Married to Mrs. Kate Astra Seeley in 1890. Educated in the public schools of his native state. After leaving school was employed as drug clerk until 1863; entered the U. S. Navy, volunteer service, as acting master's mate, serving 1863-65. During his enlistment he served in the Mississippi squadron under .Admiral D. D. Porter. Appointed hospital steward, U. S. Army Service, under Gen. Crook, Dept. of Arizona, and stationed at Fort Lowell, Tucson, Ariz., in 1871; retired to civil life in 1875, and was made asst. postmaster, Tucson, Ariz., 1875-80; also conducted a general insurance, brokerage and real estate business in Arizona. Appointed by President Harrison to office of Receiver of Public Moneys, U. S. Land Office, Tucson, Ariz. During thirty years' residence in Ariz, held many political positions and was twice elected to Territorial Senate; was pres. of that body; organized firm of Norton & Drake in 1893; executed labor contracts for the S. P. R. R. Co. and engaged in other business operations. Moved to Los Angeles, Cal., in 1900. Has been prominently identified with development of Long Beach. Pres., genl. mgr. and dir. Seaside Water Co.; same offices in San Pedro Water Co., Long Beach Bath House and Amusement Co., Seaside Investment Co., and the corporation which owns and operates the Virginia Hotel, Long Beach.
