Howell Wright came to the Department of Pediatrics in 1940 and, after several years of gentle persuasion, managed to introduce pédiatrie personnel into the nurseries. It was not until 1948, after M. Edward Davis followed Dieckmann as head of CLIH [Chicago Lying-in Hospital], that pediatricians assumed full charge of the nurseries. Even then, pediatricians did not ordinarily see infants until after they had arrived in a nursery, initial care remaining the province of the obstetrician. [p. 2892].
