Victor Herbert Arida. June 5, 1919 - March 24, 2009. Born Brooklyn New York, graduate Brooklyn College. Moved to Tucson 1945. Father, Shaker, born in Homs, Syria, a famous sanctuary where, according to tradition, the veil of the Virgin Mary is kept along with other precious relics. Mother, Victoria, born in Damascus, Syria; the oldest continually inhabited city in the world. Great Uncle Archbishop Arida , was Maronite Archbishop of the Near East; Uncle Nasib Arida was publisher of the international newspaper, Arab World, in Newark, New Jersey. Established public accounting office with brother, Robert N. Arida , in 1950, with branch offices in Marana, Nogales, Benson and Willcox. Active in the Catholic Church and attained 4th Degree in the Knights of Columbus. Started the first chess club in Tucson 1950, brought multiple world class masters for exhibitions, held in downtown YMCA. Hobbies included collecting stamps, coins and chess sets. Was part of the management team and stockholder of P.A.T. Homes, Guarantee Federal Savings and Loan, Tucson Cable Co., Lotus Communications Corp, Treasurer El Rio Country Club, Oro Valley County Club, El Encanto Homeowners Assoc., board member central YMCA, Tucson. A top athlete, Vic was active in handball, racquet ball, golf, tennis and held many trophies. He proudly started the Arida Tennis Group at the Tucson Racquet Club in 1960. He was a lifelong U of A Wildcat fan. Survived by wife and soul-mate, Patty; brother, Robert; children Bill (Patty), Liz (Hunter), Patti Maureen (Greg), Matt (Andrea); and grandchildren Juliana (greeting him in heaven), Matthew, Brooke, Patrick, Lucas and David; nephew, Philip; and niece, Cara. Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, March 28, 2009 at 1000 a.m. in Saint Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church. Committal will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Juliana Redding Endowed Fund for Youth On Their Own, 1443 W. Prince Rd., Tucson, AZ 85705.
